DESCRIPTION :

Kohlrabi is a member of the Brassica family that is grown for its edible white, green or purple “bulbs” which are actually part of the enlarged stem. With a flavor like a sweeter, milder cross between a turnip and cabbage, this cool weather veggie is easy to grow.

It is a really easily-grown vegetable from the cabbage family that makes a large round ball just above ground. The inside is tender, and has a wonderful flavor that can best be described as partway between courgette and broccoli. You sow it in spring for harvest in summer, and you can also sow in mid summer to store and use overwinter.

Leaves stand out like little spokes on the sides and top of the edible, enlarged stem. Kohlrabi’s unusual shape, but also its crisp texture and wonderful, delicately sweet, nutty, and very slightly peppery. Eat it like an apple, or try it steamed or pickled, too! One cup contains 140% of the recommended daily allowance of vitamin C.

Kohlrabi has been said to have a cabbage or turnip taste, but is milder and more sweet.  It grows above ground, similar to that of a turnip.  The bulbs can be white, green or purple depending on variety. Direct-sow your seeds 4 to 6 weeks before the last frost in your growing zone; about ¼ inch deep, and 10 seeds per foot. You can start your seedlings indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost as well.

Kohlrabi seed propagation starts with fertile soil. When starting kohlrabi from seeds, plant the seeds about ¼ inch deep in rows that are 2 feet apart. Seedlings will emerge within 4-7 days and should be thinned to 4-6 inches apart in the row.
