Turnip Gold Ball is fine grained and smooth and highly valued for its taste. This is one turnip you want in your garden for the perfectly shaped 7-10 cm (3-4″) amber globes. The flavor is sweet, mellow and smooth. For an outstanding, lustrous dish, try them mashed with butter and shallots. The roots grow quickly and keep well. Turnips have mustard-like leaves and their bulbs are generally either white or yellow. Leaves are light green and slightly hairy. They grow into an elongated oval, with toothed or wavy edges.
Golden turnips with fine grain and sweet flavor. The smooth yellow skin and yellow flesh never becomes woody. Pull at 3″ inches for best quality, and the tops can be used as a tasty green as well. Ready in about 55 days, these turnips keep well.
A cool weather crop, Golden Globe turnip seeds thrive when planted three weeks before the last frost in the spring, or after the hottest part of summer for a fall crop. Direct sow yellow turnip seeds in rich, deeply worked soil and full sun, 1/2″ deep in rows 12-18″ apart; as the seedlings grow, thin them to 4-6″ apart.
Harvest greens as soon as they reach a good size for eating; if using both the greens and the root, harvest only 2-3 leaves per root. Since small turnips have the most tenderness and flavor, pull them when they reach a size of 1-3″. To store them for extended periods, cut the top down to 1/2″ and store in a cool, dark place without washing off the dirt. Gardeners with warmer winters will be able to apply a layer of mulch and leave the crop in the ground all winter.
