DESCRIPTION :

Zinnia are one of the easiest annuals to grow, and attract butterflies to the garden. They are the perfect cut flower–the more you cut, the more you get! They thrive in the sun and heat of summer, and ask only for well-drained soil. Space the plants generously to prevent overcrowding. When cutting the blooms for the vase, trim off all the foliage; unlike the blooms, it does not age well! Direct-sow or start ahead indoors.

The modern Zinnias are one of the most brilliant colored annuals grown in the garden and are most suitable for cut flowers which last long. Flowers range in color from white, cream, primrose, golden yellow, orange, scarlet, crimson pink, lilac, purple to chocolate.

Zinnias are suitable for growing in borders and flowerbeds. Zinnia double is grown in butterfly garden as a nectar plant. Zinnia double cut flower is the center of attraction in flower shows and exhibitions. Zinnias flower continuously over a long summer and fall growing season, and mix nicely with other annuals and perennials both in the garden, and in cut flower arrangements. Zinnias embrace summer heat, tolerate drought, and are deer and rabbit resistant. Zinnias come in many shapes, sizes, and colors — for every sunny garden there is a zinnia that will grow easily and beautifully.

“Harvesting” zinnias as cut flowers will also encourage full growth, telling the zinnia to keep producing blooms until some can go to seed. Cut the stems above leave or bud nodes and the stems will keep growing and producing new blooms. Once a zinnia plant is done, you can remove it and plant something else in its place. For heirloom varieties, let one or two go-to seed and be sure to collect them for next year. Try to save seeds from zinnia plants that are tucked behind others to avoid having dying zinnias as a focal point.
